Somewhere in the Gulf of Mexico, your feet sink into a patch of black speckled sand. As you look up, you see what looks like a relic of the Mesozoic period. She pauses for a moment against the sunset, and then she does something that only her kind of pelican can do. She dives into the water below!

But her target fish slipped underneath a patch of the iridescent oil sheen that now disorients her world. Sadly, the fish she will need to feed her young are not as plentiful due to the contaminants of the oil spill. Ever nurturing, she continues on.

I hope these paintings will in some way inspire you to investigate these organisms further. Their wondrous forms and capabilities are often overlooked and underappreciated.
